英語中not...but后跟動(dòng)詞的用法：就是but后面跟不跟to的問題，有個(gè)口訣，前有do,后省to,就是說，如果前面有了do,則but后直接跟動(dòng)詞原形。

“not…but”意思是“不是……而是……”。

not后接被否定的內(nèi)容，but后接被認(rèn)可的事實(shí)。

謂語的單復(fù)數(shù)形式取決于but后面的名詞。

當(dāng)主語一樣時(shí)，省略后一句的主語和謂語，改為but連接，有兩者對(duì)比轉(zhuǎn)折的意思。

1. "Will it happen again?"— 'I hope not. but you never know.'

“這事還會(huì)再發(fā)生嗎?”——“但愿不會(huì)，但誰知道呢。”

2. She could not but congratulate him.

她只能祝賀他。

3. He is extremely strong — not but that he will catch cold at times.

雖然他特殊茁壯,可是有時(shí)也會(huì)感冒.

4. A poet could not but be gay in such a jocund company.

一個(gè)詩人在這種興高采烈的同伴中自然而然地會(huì)快樂.

5. After the fire swallowed his cottage , the old man could not but feel utterly bereft.

在一場大火吞噬了他的草屋之后, 老人唯一的感覺就是他已經(jīng)一無所有了.

6. I cannot do it; not but what a younger man might be able to do it.

我不能做, 但也許年輕一點(diǎn)的人能做.

7. Overcome with admiration, he could not but imitate them.

他企羨之余, 不免摹仿.
